Roof Underlayment Installation: Synthetic Felt and Ice Guard

Our team at New Look is working hard to provide a full roof replacement for this homeowner.

Take a look at our team in action on a full roof replacement. The short video shows exactly what goes into the underlayment phase of a roof installation, one of the most important steps that most homeowners never see.

Before any shingles go down, the roof deck needs to be properly protected with underlayment. On this job we're installing synthetic felt across the full deck surface, followed by ice and water guard in the valleys.

Synthetic felt has largely replaced traditional 15 lb and 30 lb felt paper in modern roofing installations. It's lighter, stronger, and more resistant to tearing during installation. It also holds up better if the roof is exposed to rain before shingles go down, which is a real consideration on any multi-day job or when weather is unpredictable.

Ice and water guard is a self-adhering membrane installed in the valleys and along the eaves where water is most likely to collect or back up. In a Louisville winter, ice dams are a genuine concern. When snow melts during the day and refreezes at night, water can back up under shingles and find its way into the roof deck. Ice and water guard creates a watertight seal in those vulnerable areas that standard underlayment alone can't provide.

The valleys, where two roof planes meet, are among the highest-traffic areas for water on any roof. Getting the ice guard installation right in those spots is critical to long-term performance. Our team takes the time to do it correctly on every job because cutting corners here is one of the most common reasons roofs develop leaks years ahead of schedule.

This is what a thorough, detailed roof installation looks like from the inside out. If you'd like a free estimate on a roof replacement for your home, give us a call at (502) 341-4415.
