5 Questions to Ask Your Roofing Company

5 Questions to Ask Your Roofing Company

One of the best things you can do before hiring any roofing company is to ask them questions about the roof they plan to install on your home or business, and how they plan to install it. Here are five questions you should ask to ensure your satisfaction with their work.

1) How long have you been in business?

While you should always check that a roofer is local, equally important is their history of customer satisfaction. A good roofer will be able to tell you how long they’ve been in business and whether or not they offer a guarantee on their work. If they don’t offer guarantees, steer clear—roofing is one area of home repair where peace of mind comes with a price tag.

A reputable company will be able to tell you how long they’ve been in business, how many roofs they’ve completed, and how many of those roofs have come with a guarantee. A good roofer will be able to demonstrate that their customers are happy with their work.

2) What materials do you use?

If you decide to get a new roof installed on your home, there are several options available. There are asphalt shingle roofs, metal roofs, tile roofs and even plastic roofs that can be installed on your home. Any of these options will improve how your home looks, but they all come with different pros and cons. For example, tile might look nice but it is heavier than other options.

Another question you should ask is regarding the full scope of the work and the options. Ask whether or not you need a new roof, or if your current roof can be repaired. If your roof has significant damage from weather elements like wind, hail, or snow, then getting a new roof installed might be a good idea.

3) Will I be able to find references?

References can provide insight into a roofer’s work and prove that he or she is reputable. Don’t be afraid to ask for at least five references; more is even better! When you call these previous customers, be sure to ask about: their experience working with your roofer, if they would use him again, and if there was anything they didn’t like about their experience.

You should always research a roofer on Google to ensure that their public reviews match the references and what you're being told.

4) Do you have insurance?

Having your roofer carry insurance means that in case of damage, you can file a claim with their company directly and avoid going through your own insurance provider. If your roofer doesn’t have general liability or worker’s compensation on hand, consider another—you don’t want to be liable for any damages done by an uninsured party. It may also protect you from dishonest roofers who would do more harm than good.

Don't hire a "chuck in a truck", ensure the business you're looking at is reputable and insured.

5) Are there any hidden costs?

As you ask a contractor these questions, it’s also a good idea to inquire about any possible hidden costs. For example, your roofer may offer an all-inclusive price for replacing your shingles and repairing your gutter. But if he or she can’t answer yes when you ask whether there are any other fees (like those associated with hauling away your old shingles), that’s not a good sign.

Be sure you understand the full scope of the work and any additional fees that may come as a result. You don't want an estimate doubled without understanding the why behind it.
