Full Metal Roof Tearoff and Replacement in One Day

Yesterday was a demanding day for our team at New Look, and we have a lot to show for it. This project covered five major phases in a single day, each one requiring a different skill set and careful attention to detail.

Here is what we worked through:

Tearing off a standing seam metal roof is significantly different from removing standard asphalt shingles. Metal panels are fastened with concealed clips and screws, making the tearoff more technical and time consuming. The panels are also heavier and awkward to handle on a steep pitch, requiring a team that knows how to move them safely without damaging the decking underneath.

Once the metal was removed, the real work began on the wood. Any roof replacement is only as good as the deck it sits on, and this project had damaged wood that needed to come out before anything new could go down. We inspected every square foot, replaced the compromised sections, and made sure the deck was solid and level before moving forward.

Box gutters are built directly into the roofline rather than hanging on the exterior fascia like standard gutters. When they fail, and they often do on older homes, they can cause significant water damage to the structure below. Removing them properly requires careful work around the fascia and soffit to avoid creating new problems in the process.

With the deck repaired and cleaned up, the team installed synthetic felt underlayment across the full surface. Synthetic felt is stronger and more moisture resistant than traditional 15 lb felt paper, making it a better choice for a project of this complexity. Finally, ice and water guard was installed in all the valleys, creating a watertight seal in the areas most vulnerable to water backup and ice damming.
